Kost castle
Kost Castle is one of the best-preserved Gothic castles in the Czech Republic. Located in the scenic Bohemian Paradise region, it lies about 80 km northeast of Prague. The name “Kost” means “bone,” referencing its strong walls that resisted many attacks. Built in the 14th century by Beneš of Vartemberk, it has a unique triangular layout and a central tower designed to avoid cannon fire. The castle has passed through the hands of several noble families, including the Lobkowicz and Kinský. Guided tours take visitors through medieval torture chambers, a chapel, kitchens, and historic noble rooms. Unlike more famous Czech castles, Kost offers a quieter, more authentic experience. It’s surrounded by forests and sandstone rock formations, making it ideal for nature lovers and hikers. Families will enjoy live knight shows and the castle’s dramatic atmosphere. Kost Castle is a must-see for anyone interested in medieval history and off-the-beaten-path travel in the Czech Republic.
